Reknitting

Reknitting is a repair done on knit fabrics.  Reknitting cost starts at $30 for the smallest hole of approximately 1/4″ x 1/4″. Repairs are done by finding a piece of yarn in the sweater itself so the repair will match exactly.  This in itself can be time-consuming. I have been known to remove a row of the knit just to obtain a piece of yarn to match exactly. This does not alter the length in any significant way but it is a job in and of itself, therefore if this is needed it will increase the cost of your repair.

To reknit, each row of threads affected has to be replaced with a new row.  Therefore, the more rows affected, the higher the cost. With most knits, the repairs are virtually invisible. Most knits are suitable for reknitting but light colors or sheer fabrics will show the repair. Also, some fibers do not lend well to reknitting. Cotton can be done but often shows the repair if it is a larger area.

This type of repair is most commonly needed because of moth damage. If your garment is in need of repair because of moth damage it is required that you have the garment cleaned beforehand. This is not only needed because of sanitary concerns but dry cleaning will also many times reveal more damage that the moths have done. Often when they are eating the fibers they will only eat part way through a thread and you may not notice damage in that area but after it is cleaned it will be revealed. I also recommend holding your garment up to the light of a window and peer through the inside to try and find all the damaged areas. If you have one moth hole it is highly likely that you have another. Try to locate all of the holes before you request an estimate.

I can also repair snags. These repairs start at $15 and the length and severity of the snag determine the price.

I do not repair thinning elbows on sweaters.

This is what it looks like when you hold a sweater up to the window to locate holes. If you peer through it from the inside the holes will pop out and make them easier to locate. It can be a bit difficult to maneuver but needs to be done for the entire sweater to ensure you locate all the damage.
